Getting into Flintloque - Eve Hallow's First Game

The Simple Scenario is Set Up!
On Saturday evening I invited Eve Hallow over to my place for his first game of Flintloque.  Eve was more than happy to come over as it got him out of his crypt for a few hours and gave him a chance to show off his lovely newly painted Armorcian Elves...to be shot to pieces by my Korsucan Rangers.

Wyndorc's Korsucan Rangers
As it was his first game and he is by nature a painter not a full on player we decided to play 'Super Fast Loque' which is a stripped down version of Flintloque Lite used by me at conventions and when playing with very young players.  It introduces you to the game with only the core of the game engine meaning a focus of tactics more than anything.  As a favour to me (I am fairly well knackered after a week at work and the three kids at home) we also decided to only use two different ranged weapons.  The Ferach Elf Musket and the Ferach Elf Duelling Pistol.  Leaving out my character's Dwarf Jager Rifles kept it simple for Eve to follow.  With this agreed on we set up the table.

Eve's Armorican Elf Line
Roughly ten miniatures a side (I had twelve but he had a mounted Trolkin Officer so it evened out!) starting at either end of a three foot by four gaming area.  A couple of Catalucian style buildings, some trees, rocks and so on and there you go.  One ready table.  There was no scenario as such, just a straight fight to the death.  Would I win...well obviously experience was on my side but my dice rolls are notoriously unlucky and this streak continued.

The game lasted nine turns and as you can see from the pictures a good time was had by both of us.  Eve picked up the rules fast and was a staunch supporter of the Tyrant Mordred after the very first shots were fired.  Once the range had closed to about 35cm the muskets began to bark and some fairly ineffectual shooting was under way.  The range continued to close and the Armorican Elves pushed into the trees in front of the buildings where my  Korsucans had split into two groups and begun to try to sweep around the Ferach.  It as all going well...until disaster.

Captain Wyndorc Dies!
A damn lucky shot killed Wyndorc my section leader!  Eve cackled like a witch at the black cat emporium at this and continued to taunt me over it for the rest of the game.  Stunned I was!  The first death in play and it took out my favourite figure.  Did I break or quit?  Did I hell.  I just took the kid gloves off!

The Armoricans push home their advance
Play continued and while some characters held their fire others frantically reloaded and a few rushed in for melee combat.  I did well in this taking out one Armorcian.  But Eve sent in his Muskox riding Trolkin at the charge and with one sweep of his hammer he took the head clean off one of my rangers.  While he laughed at this the three other Rangers nearby pulled the Trolkin to the ground and bayoneted him to gristle and bone.

Pushing into the Trees...the Emperor's finest!
As the game neared the end the action got closer and closer there were fewer and fewer bouts of musketry and instead it was cold steel and musket butts in a mass of close action.  Characters on both sides died but in the end I won with only two characters left unwounded.  The Ferach were vanquished from the field.

My remaining Korsucan's take a breather!
I had a good time and I think next time (Eve said he wants more!) we will up the complexity by using different weapons and racial types.  Within three games he will be playing the full rules.

Two asides came up.  Firstly the high standard of Eve's painting on his miniatures.  These Elves are his first non Games Workshop 28mm and he did really well with them having to read up on Napoleonics over the last two weeks.  Secondly as you might have seen in some of the pictures I used little square plastic tokens in bright colours.  Before I am asked where these are from I will tell you.  The Pound Shop! (read as 99c Store if you are American).  A very cheap little girl's kit for decorating a notebook.  Over one hundred counters in hard plastic for not much at all.

I am sure Eve Hallow will put up his own version and images of this event.  Have a look.

  2. Wow, looked like a fun scenario! First non GW 28mm minis? That's exciting! Good work!
I will have to try and use the FLintloque Lite rules in demos, I have tried a couple of times to use the full rules, only to find myself getting confused and working my way back to 1st edition! I will play 3rd edition! I must!!!

  3. It was fun Rob. Thanks for your comment.

The full version of Flintloque 3rd edition is very character driven but you can have a way faster game with the Lite rules for sure. There are some players who prefer the older editions but I will not go back, 3rd is the ultimate incarnation for me.

Eve painted his Elves in about four days which is impressive and his colours were (as you can see in the pictures) really rich and vibrant.

  5. Hello,

I realize this is awfully tardy to the party, but would it be possible to get a copy of "Super Fast Loque"? I've tried to run simple games for young people and newcomers at conventions, but even Flintloque Lite is a bit much when time is limited.

    Either way, best regards,

    1. Hello Chris,

Certainly you can. I will make up a new updated PDF of it first and then send it to your email this week. I have forwarded your email to the company. If you have any other questions please do ask.

      Regards,
